Almost everyeone knows that the USS Nautilus was the world's first nuclear powered submarine. This in itself makes the Nautilus a major accomplishment in history, but on August 3, 1958 the Nautilus accomplished a feat that will remain unsurpassed. She surfaced briefly for a final navigation check, then submerged to start a 2,114 mile journey under the Polar Ice Cap. At exactly 11:15 PM (EDT) she passed under the ice onto the North Atlantic.
