With its V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) capability, the first-generation Harrier was a revolutionary aircraft. It was succeeded by the second-generation BAE Systems Harrier II, which is currently in use with the RAF and the Royal Navy (since 2006 upon the Sea Harrier’s withdrawal from service). The Harrier is used in the ground attack and reconnaissance role, its primary air-to-air missile being the AIM-9 Sidewinder.

Dragon has unveiled a pair of exciting new 1/144 scale Harrier models. The models represent a GR7 and a GR9 of the RAF in a convenient twin-pack.

These plastic kits have been carefully designed to Dragon’s exacting standards with accurate details throughout. Expert engineering ensures they are easy to assemble and a pleasure to assemble. The GR7 took its maiden flight in 1990, and it has seen operational service in the former Yugoslavia, Kosovo and Iraq. The newer GR9, meanwhile, received upgraded avionics and weapons compared to the standard GR7. This allows it to carry the latest weapons such as the Brimstone missile, a guided antitank missile that is basically an upgraded AGM-114 Hellfire. For the benefit of all modelers, this Dragon kit includes brand new Brimstone fire-and-forget missiles to fill out the model’s munitions payload. Both models are supplied with accurate and attractive decals from Cartograf, with the GR9 featuring special markings honoring the ceremony of the introduction of this particular variant. These are exciting and impressive models of an aircraft set to remain in service until at least 2015 when the first F-35 JSFs enter service.
