Since the invention of the transistor and the integrated circuit, the history of electronics has been a constant progression of smaller, lighter, more efficient and most of all more flexible and reliable components for military, comsumer and hobby products.
Some of us remember 2-cubic-foot tube transmitters with 135-volt batteries in them and receiver weights measured in pounds. In the late 1960s, we were impressed with flight packs that weighed less than one pound. Those tube transmitters were available on only one or two frequencies. Transistorized transmitters were available on six. Integrated circuit transmitters were available on fifty.
The 1990s brought us component weights measured in grams, and now we've got airplanes that weigh less than one ounce!
What have we here? A 2.4GHz digital system that allows any number of planes to operate at the same time, just as thousands of people in a football stadium can talk at the same time without electronic interference. Ain't technology grand?
