For generations, when Americans think of model trains, their first thought is of Lionel's famous O-Scale (1:43) trainsets, often passed down through the generations.  But they require lots of space, so HO (literally, "Half-O" -- 1:87)) came about, allowing millions of train enthusiasts to get in on the ground floor in smaller houses, apartments, etc.

But if that's still taking up too much space, try N-Scale (1:20).  Be sure to consider magnifying glasses!
