The Union Pacific "Big Boy" - a legendary locomotive of unmatched power and size, boasting a 4-8-8-4 wheelbase with two linked sets of drivers. First delivered in 1941, retired in 1961, then refitted for excursion and event use in 2019, Big Boy #4014 has a storied history of over 20 years of operation in standard service, and can be seen today heading up the Union Pacific's fleet of heritage equipment for special excursions. This model reflects this gorgeous locomotive's appearance as of August 2021, and is sure to astonish and delight any steam enthusiast!

Kato’s N scale Big Boy engine is a wholly new and unique design from any steam engine that has come before, utilizing two coreless motors in dual articulated metal mechanisms to power the 16 total driving wheels. Thanks to the articulated design just like the real engine, the two sets of driving wheels are able to move independently which gives the engine the ability to navigate 11&Prime radius curves, allowing the locomotive to run with Kato’s other large scale engines like the FEF-3 and GS-4. The engine also features pickup both from the drive sections as well as the tender for maximum electrical coverage and reliability, and will be fully ready to run no matter which variation you purchase with all details fit and ready to go out of the box, options for pre-installed DCC and even DCC + Sound, and operational lighting from the deck mounted forward facing headlight.

Unit 4014 is immediately recognizable in its 2021 appearance thanks to the brilliant cylinder covers which harken back to the locomotives original look.

Unlike some engines like the FEF-3 or GS-4 which have a headlight on the smokebox door, the Big Boy has a deck mounted headlamp which turns along with the front of the engine.

The Big Boy is massive, with two individual sets of 8 drivers. From the side you can see the independently moving front deck and articulated driver sections.

Thanks to the articulated mid-body bend from the two independent motorized sections, the Big Boy is capable of navigating 11" curves, something that would be otherwise impossible for such a large engine.
